Customer asks:

Is a threshold needed for an interior door? What threshold solutions does Aru Grupp offer?

Aru Grupp answers:

An interior door threshold is a detail that has a significant impact on how the whole door system works, even though visually it may look like a simple transition between floors. In reality, the threshold is closely connected to sound insulation, air tightness, and comfort between rooms, as well as the correct and safe connection of floor coverings.

When choosing a door, it is not enough to decide only on design and finish, because the bottom solution of the door – whether it is a threshold or an alternative system – strongly affects how the door performs in everyday use. Therefore, Aru Grupp produces interior doors with different technical threshold solutions so that each door can fit exactly the function of the specific room and project requirements.

The choice of a threshold or an alternative bottom solution mainly depends on whether the priority is better sound insulation, ventilation requirements, accessibility, or a clean and even floor surface.

Threshold options for interior doors

All Aru Grupp interior doors can be ordered with different threshold solutions. This allows precise control of the gap between the door and the floor, and how the door functions.

Main options include:

  • with threshold, door leaf gap under threshold 16 mm
  • with threshold, door leaf gap under threshold 6 mm
  • ventilation threshold, door leaf gap under threshold 16 mm
  • without threshold, door leaf bottom gap 16 mm

These solutions are designed to support both construction needs and functional use. For example, a smaller gap under the door improves sound insulation, while a larger gap or ventilation threshold allows air to move between rooms where it is needed for ventilation systems.

Drop-down seal – a modern alternative to a threshold

In addition to traditional threshold solutions, we also offer a drop-down seal for interior doors.

A drop-down seal is a mechanism installed in the bottom of the door leaf that activates automatically when the door closes. When the door is closed, the seal drops down and closes the gap between the door and the floor. When the door opens, the seal lifts back into the door and does not touch the floor.

This solution provides:

  • better sound insulation even without a threshold
  • improved air and light tightness
  • a visually continuous floor surface
  • a modern and technically clean door solution

A drop-down seal is a good choice when you want to combine a minimalist design with functional tightness without a traditional threshold.

We have also written about drop-down seals in a previous post: How to maintain door sound insulation with forced ventilation?

The right solution depends on room usage

The choice of an interior door threshold or alternative solution is not only a visual decision. It depends on the function of the room, ventilation, acoustic requirements, and interior design goals.

If the goal is maximum sound insulation and a traditional, reliable solution, a threshold is a very good choice. If the priority is a clean visual result and modern architectural design, a threshold-free solution with a drop-down seal may be more suitable.

We help find the right technical and visual solution for every project, considering both production possibilities and real usage needs. Contact us and we will find the best solution for your interior doors.
