Customer asks:

Which sliding patio door should I choose – and should I opt for double- or triple-glazed units?

Aru Grupp answers:

A sliding patio door is a very popular choice today, as it brings plenty of natural light into the home, creates a spacious feel, and seamlessly connects indoor and outdoor areas into one unified space. Aru Grupp offers sliding patio doors in two different opening configurations: the door leaf can move either towards the exterior or towards the interior.

Sliding doors are available in both wood and wood-aluminium versions. This allows you to choose a solution that best matches the style of the building and the intensity of use.

Double- or triple-glazed unit

The glazing unit is not just a technical detail. It directly affects how warm and comfortable your home is, as well as your heating costs.

A double-glazed unit is more suitable for summer homes or spaces used seasonally. However, for year-round living spaces, a triple-glazed unit is clearly the better choice. It retains heat more efficiently, reduces the cold feeling near the glass, and also helps to reduce outside noise.

If the sliding door is part of a living room, a triple-glazed unit is recommended. In Estonian conditions, this is the most reliable solution.

Different opening solutions

Sliding patio doors are not all the same. One of the main choices is whether the moving door leaf runs on the interior or exterior side.

In this type of sliding door, the door leaf moves along the threshold, so there is essentially no loss of space in either option. The difference lies mainly in usability and weather resistance.

If the moving door leaf is on the exterior side, the advantage is better protection against strong wind and rain. Wind presses the door firmly against the seal, reducing the possibility of water ingress. However, in winter, the threshold may become covered with ice or snow, making the door harder or even impossible to open.

If the moving door leaf is on the interior side, winter use is more convenient, as ice and snow do not obstruct operation. However, in very strong storms and heavy rain, in extreme conditions, water may be forced through the seal.

Therefore, the choice depends on whether maximum weather resistance or year-round ease of use is more important.

Wood or wood-aluminium sliding door

The choice of material affects both appearance and maintenance requirements.

Wooden sliding doors are warm and natural, and they suit homes where a classic or Scandinavian style is preferred.

Wood-aluminium solutions are more practical. The interior remains wood, while the exterior is protected by aluminium, which better withstands rain, sun, and temperature changes. This means less maintenance and a longer lifespan.

In the Estonian climate, wood-aluminium is often the most optimal choice – visually appealing yet durable.

A sliding patio door is not just an access point to the outdoors. A well-chosen solution brings more natural light into the home, improves thermal performance, and significantly enhances everyday comfort.
